National Medical Commission Bill, introduced for the first time in Dec 2017 but could not be passed, finally got approved by the Cabinet in July 2019. As per the government, this commission is mainly established to reform prevailing trends in the medical system in India. Main key points of this Bill are as follows
Cabinet approves the National Medical Commission Bill (NMC), 2019 primarily to establish the National Medical Commission instead of the Medical Council of India (MCI). This commission will be responsible for regulating the functioning of government and private medical colleges in India and all aspects related to the medical profession. For medical institutes, It will govern the inspections, approvals, fee structure, seat allotment, etc.
There is a provision to setup Medical advisory committee which will be there to advise the Commission on all relevant functions
Also known as NEXT exam for medical students, this exam will be based on final year exam of MBBS and will work as an entrance exam to take PG seat instead of existing NEET-PG exam as well as screening test for Foreign medical Graduate (FMG) students till date, there are separate exams for central Institutes like AIIMS, PGI, and JIPMER. Also, there is a separate exam for students seeking to obtain License to practice in India after completing their MBBS from any approved Medical college abroad. Once MNC is functional, all these exams will be converted into one exam known as NEXT Exam ( National Exit Exam) for medical students
